Wrestling is great when they can manage to have great rivalries. When two fighters constantly go at it and it's entertaining a great rivalry is born. There have been so many over the years. Pretty much everyone has fought everyone, but some are just more memorable than others for a slew of reasons. Some were legendary matches. Some were more about just talking smack. Here are my top wrestling rivalries. In the comments tell me what yours are.
1. Hulk Hogan Vs. The Macho Man.
Hulk Hogan was at the peak of Hulkamania. He was by far the biggest star the industry had ever seen. He was virtually unbeatable but he did get beat once in a great while and once was a title match at wrestlemania to the Man who I believe may have been the most talented all around wrestler when you count in ring, ability, moves, power, speed, mic skills and that was The Macho Man. Him and Hogan had the greatest rivalry. They were the two biggest stars and Macho Man had the prettiest wife in Elizabeth that would be in the story lines. Eventually they would team up as the Mega Powers and form a tag team and that was pretty epic as well. I will never forget the macho man hitting hogan with the ring bell in that match. The rivalry had its peak of only a couple years as later on and in the WCW days after they were at most times friends.
Then once again Macho Man even though many people may forget he was at the center of one of the biggest moments in wrestling history. When Hogan turned heel in WCW and joined NWO, remember who he stabbed in the back right? The MAcho Man. Everyone thought Hogan was on his way down to help Savage and then he dropped the leg on him forming the NWO.
2. The Rock Vs. HHH
This one was huge for me. I was a WCW fan til the end but the 2 years or so when stars were leaving I started paying attention to WWE now also. Jericho got a huge push, Angle was the most talented wrestler I had ever seen but besides those two coming to the roster around 2000 it was the Birth of Smackdown and the Game HHH kicking The Rocks ass every night that got my attention. They had a great rivalry. Great matches. Great stuff on the mic. The angle was Stephanie HHH's wife and Vinces daughter is running WWE and her and HHH just make life miserable for the Rock. He loses more than he wins but he usually was getting jumped or hit with a sledgehammer. Usually I'm not a fan of this but at a time they started giving their opponent their own special moves and it was real cool. One night HHH rock bottomed the Rock thru a glass door. EPIC stuff. The Invasion of WCW stars failed miserably since they didnt bring the biggest stars right away. There was no Sting, No Goldberg, No Hogan and the other big stars had already left WCW and been in the WWE for a couple years like Benoit and Jericho. That angle failed badly but woulda been what grabbed my attention but thank god for the Rock HHH cuz if i missed that era and went right into the JBL days I may have totally given up on wrestling. The Stephanie HHH Rock dynamic lasted a cpl years and IMO would still work since the storyline is pretty much the truth. She is the boss so its like that.
3. Kurt Angle Vs Brock Lesnar.
I like guys who can perform and no one put on a show in the ring like these two. Brock isnt the best on the mic but he is clearly the biggest star in the WWE by a mile today in 2015 but he was just getting going back around the days he was fuedign with Kurt Angle. At that time the company had soooo much talent on the roster. Having those two guys wrestle each other was a treat. Usually in Angle matches you could see he would have to slow down to letother guys catch up or be as fluid with brock there was none of that. Brock wasnt an olympic champ like Angle but he was nasty in college and was a freak of a man.. They put on some epic boughts both even moonsaulting backflips off the top of the cage to put on the show for the crowd. Suplex city with these two wrestling experts. This was a clinic on how to put on a match.I forget the year id say ths was around 2003 2004 or maybe a year or two earlier.
4. The Rock Vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin.
They headlined three wrestlemanias in a row and then after Austin was pretty much done. He had a short time as a heel which was really stupid and made no sense but I'd like to forget about that and go back to the battles with him and the Rock. It started with Rocky Maiavia being the Corporate Champ, basically Vinces lil bitch. Not a real title by any means. The was the whole angle of Mcmahon vs Austin which we will get into later on the list but this is how the rivalry was born with Austin fighting with the Rock. Austin was clearly the top guy at the time but once the Rock got much improved on the mic he dropped the name Maiavia and just became the Rock. Kinda ended his Corporate champ days or the Nation of Domination. It wasnt clear who the top guy was anymore. You had Austin but now the Rock was right there one his level. Their matches were epic. Very good chemistry and one of th best rivalries of all time. For most of those days Austin was the good guy and the Rock was the bad guy but later on the Rock became very very popular. This fued was right during Austins peak which was at the time the WCW was finally starting to lose to WWF. It was Steve Austin vs the Rock and other guys like MAnkind and HHH that were carrying the company thru its darkest days and they came out on top in the end. In big part to this and after the merger the HHH Rock rivalry In my opinion.
5. The New World Order Vs The Entire WCW.
This would be higher if they didnt go so overboard with it after a while. At first it was a small elite group and thats what mad them so special. When you had Hogan, Hall, Nash, Steiner that's when they were in beast mode. They would go after every big star in WCW. Steiner would hit people with chairs. Hogan would spraypaint on them. It was great. Sting had a great fued with them but eventually the faction split into two creating the NWO red Wolfpac which at first was very cool. They were the bad guys and they got the biggest cheers. After a while though they started letting everyone in and it got stupid. This one thing The NWO is what almost put the WWF out of business. Hulk Hogan Vinces biggest star was lured away by Ted Turner to the Tune of about ten million a year. At first hogans character seemed stale and we werent sure how it would pay off but then the before mentioned bash at the beach happened, Hogan dropped the Leg on Savage and the New World Order was born. This was the absolute peak of professional wrestling, Its peak was around 1996-1998. They would bury everyone and the fans loved it. Hogan turning heel was never expected and changed the game. Their were many other factors tho. WCW simply was buying everyone. All the stars with big guaranteed contracts. All the guys you knew were going there so it had huge star power but it was the NWO that took it to new heights never to be reached again most likely. Goldberg and Sting were pretty much the only ones to have a fair amount of success verse them. Goldberg beating Hogan was a huge moment for WCW and one of the last big nights in the ratings war.
6. Kurt Angle Vs. HHH
This wasn't just cuz of Kurt's in ring ability like his fueds with Lesnar. This was funny. Kurt had great charisma and of course him and HHH had great matches as HHH was the top heel in the business but Stephanie was also involved in this as Kurt appeared to really have a crush on her infuriating HHH of course. It was funny stuff on Smackdown followed by some great matches and a rivalry Iasting a short time. Smackdown was really good the first 5 years or so. It can't be overstated how much of a factor HHH was to that. He was always the top heel it seemed and he was a great one and I used to totally dislike the guy before coming back to WWF. He grew on me a lot and he grew a lot lol. He used to be a beanpole when he was Hunter Hearst Hemsley back in the day. So you have the best heel maybe of all time here fueding with maybe the best in ring talent of all time with Kurt Angle. Excellent stuff.
7. The Hardy Boys vs The Dudley Boys vs Edge and Christian.
While I certainly am no big fan of any of these guys individually other than Jeff Hardy their TLC tag matches were epic. You would see the craziest stuff. Spears off a ladder, flying swanton bombs thru a table and much more. They were all great tag teams and I think you could make a case for either as being the top tag team of the era.
8. Stone Cold Steve Austin Verse Mr Mcmahon
Normally when a boss of a wrestling company is gonna fight his wrestlers you would think it would be an ass kicking for the old man. Then Vince came to the ring. The guy is massively built. Not a good wrestler at all but did give it his all in the ring. People wanted to see him and Austin who he always screwed over get physical and they finally did. The Royal Rumble 1997 it came to a head. This was the first WWF event I had watched in over a decade. I got back into wrestling with WCW a cpl years before but a friend told me to come over I had to see this. Its good he said. It was awesome. These guys hated each other and beat each other up all over the arena. This was mainly the angle during Austins peak. His boss had it out for him. Everyone could relate to that so people seeing him beat up is boss was very satisfying. This also helped push the WWF back to the top. They werent catching up in ratings yet but now you could see all their talent starting to become huge stars. The Rock, Mankind, HHH, Austin who of course was from WCW originally. this was a huge PPV for them.
9. CM Punk vs Johnny Nitro aka Jon Morrison
This was later on when a lot of you probably were not watching. The product really took a nosedive. All the above mentioned guys except HHH are pretty much gone from WWE but a couple young guys put on these epic matches on the ECW show which was really just a WCW show since they bought them out.CM Punk who was an unknown and Johnny Nitro had had some sick moves had some really awesome fluid matches. It didnt last long enough and probably is barely memorable to most of you but for me it was some of the better matches of that era.CM Punk eventually took his game to the top and walked away to try UFC. I heard Morrison is wrestling the independents somewhere but I haven't seen him in years. Surprised he never made it huge.He had a lot of talent and the look. He'd be a perfect IC Champ/Contender.
10. Bill Goldberg Vs. Kevin Nash.
This was a shorter in ring rivalry but it burned for years in the guys heads for real. Nash ended Goldbergs undefeated streak and many people feel it wasn't time and there were accusations sinc eNash had some story telling power or whatever in his contract that it was his decision to end the streak and give himself the belt then back to Hogan after but that's another story. The match itself was good and listening to inteviews I don't know who to believe but Nash says he didnt have the power to make that call and didn't. Hey how long can a guy be undeafeated anyway? I think it was actually about time and if anyone could do it it would be Nash before he got too old. Goldberg they made you the biggest star outta nowhere. Undefeated to everyone even taking the belt from Hogan himself so he has nothing to bitch about. I don't think these guys like each other very much to this day. Goldberg didn't need the undefeated gimmick anymore he was not only an established star now he was as big as Hogan or Sting. It's debatable who was WCWs top guy then but the conversation has to involve all three of those guys.
The one we never got to see and all wanted was Goldberg Vs. Austin. Goldberg didnt come to WWE right away. He waited a couple years actually even though the fans always wanted him there. When he finally arrived Austin had just retired. They did gimmicks with the two of them and had Austin Referee Goldberg's match with Lesnar but they never got to fight. It's a shame.
